Save The Hill at Bertuccio and Francis

The Issue

A proposal for a new development in Salem is pending city review and approval: If approved, a new sub-division will destroy the 3 acres of open space that exists in the highlands of Salem, MA in order to build five houses. This land - seemingly untouched for hundreds of years - is an incredible open space in the middle of our city. Bats, raccoons, coyotes, deer, rabbits, squirrels, red tail hawk, turkeys, cardinals, doves, and a great number of other woodland creatures call this land home. The land abuts the newly restored Bertrum Field, and touches protected land next to Collins Middle School, connects to Salem Hosptial, and overlooks the city and beyond. The path next to the ledge, completely made of bedrock, is suspected to be part of "The Ancient Trial" - an important part of our city's history. In addition to the predicted ruin of this wild oasis, homes in this quiet neighborhood will likely be impacted by blasting - foundations at risk! - and water run-off. A detention pond is proposed, causing alarm due to standing water attracting bugs and posing a safety risk for children in the area. A road developed on The Hill would cause a great deal of run-off into the current neighborhood at Bertuccio Avenue, especially during the winter months when snow piles up. Also impacted is the Francis Road neighborhood. These houses sit directly under The Ledge of The Hill and would be at great risk from falling debris and problems from blasting causing boulders and other debris to land on their lawns and in their homes. We oppose this development because we feel the land can best serve the city by remaining untouched - trails to hike, open space to preserve, and woodland creatures to protect. Please consider signing this petition and let the city know that we want to preserve this place that can not be replicated if destroyed.
