In May of this year Ireland became only the second country in the world to officially declare a “climate and biodiversity emergency” and Hellfire Massys Residents Association are proud to introduce presentations on the subject by Dr Dara Stanley and Oliver Schurmann followed by a discussion chaired by Dr Christopher Moriarty.
Dr Stanley will make a presentation on the current state of biodiversity and pollinators in Ireland and current research underway in relation to same. Oliver will follow with his presentation about the practical challenges of environmentally friendly garden design and maintenance sympathetic to biodiversity and pollinators and how we can each play our part in making a difference. Dr Moriarty will then chair a discussion on the topic.
The event will be held in the Orlagh Country House (https://orlaghestate.ie) a hidden gem in South Dublin in the foothills below the Hellfire Club on the 8th October 7.30pm - 9.30pm.

Dr Dara Stanley is an ecologist whose research interests encompass plants, insects and how they interact in terms of benefits (and problems) to both humans and the environment. She is a lecturer in the School of Agriculture and Food Science at University College Dublin where she leads a research team investigating questions around plant-pollinator ecology, biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture (www.stanleyecologylab.org). Dara grew up in Killakee in the Dublin Mountains where her interest in nature and the environment began.
Oliver Schurmann runs the Mount Venus nursery together with his wife Liat. He needs little introduction as he is well known as a serial winner of prizes at the Bloom Garden Festival and the Hampton Court Garden Festival in the UK. (https://mountvenusnursery.com). Oliver is passionate about nature and the environment and he has been designing and building gardens in an environmentally friendly manner for many years. Oliver is also a native of the area and grew up in Woodtown.
Dr Christopher Moriarty spent the greater part of his career as a fishery biologist in the government service and has written numerous articles, scientific papers and books relating to the Liffey, Dodder and other aspects of the Irish countryside. His most recent book “The River Liffey History and Heritage” was published in October 2018. Christoper was born in Rathfarnham and currently lives in Woodtown.
