The Issue

Don't you, forget about me ....

Save the Hedgerow at Billet Road in London Borough of Redbridge.

Bellway Homes application to cap a contaminated Landfill will cause a Permanent MAJOR NEGATIVE effect on the habitat.

Its essential that this hedgerow, called H4, some 300m long, is saved. It lies outside the capping and landfill area. There's no reason to remove it.

From supporting documents "Under hedgerow Priority Habitats hedgerows H1, H2, H3, H4 are of intrinsic ecology value and provide habitats suitable for a range of protected species, including amphibians, nesting birds, invertebrates, bats, hazel dormouse and reptiles. But they are to be removed resulting in a loss of approx 500m.

H4 Hedgerow runs across the bottom of the site approx 300m, its the historical boundary between Hainault House land and Willow Farm. It should be conserved as long as possible for its wildlife corridor and historical connection.

Using the Hooper Formula this hedgerow is 400 years old with an average of 4 species within 30m according to the Ecology Report.

The Medieval Hainault House, called Henhault House, is shown on the 1777 map by Chapman and Andre. Situated opposite what is now called Fairlop Plain, back then a forest and the boundary hedges are shown on the 1862 - 1871 map. See here for more info.

CPRE and Woodland Trust are in agreement, hedgerows are vital, provide homes and corridors for wildlife and help tackle the climate crisis by capturing carbon. The Government have accepted the call to increase hedgerows by 40%.

The capping will take 3yrs during which time there will be considerable dust, dirt, lorry movements bringing in the clay and noise. This Hedgerow can help the wildlife and reduce the pollution. It has survived for 400 years, lived through gravel extraction followed by unrelgulated landfill. Surely it can stay another 3yrs (or more).
