The issue

I am writing this petition not just as a volunteer, but as one of the 60 passionate Volunteer Peer Educators who have dedicated time and effort to improve the health outcomes for older residents across New South Wales through the Health Promotion Service for Older People (HPSOP) program. This initiative, funded by NSW Health through a Ministerially Approved Grant, is an effective outreach program to empower older individuals with the knowledge they need to manage their health effectively.

The HPSOP program plays a crucial role in connecting senior citizens with invaluable information on a variety of health conditions, ranging from chronic illness management to general wellness practices. Through interactive and insightful sessions, we have touched the lives of many, enabling healthier choices, improving health literacy, and fostering a community of informed elderly citizens.

We operate across NSW, in a variety of settings, and in a variety of languages other than English - truly a personalised, wellness oriented program for older people.

Regrettably, recent developments have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of this well-regarded  program. Although the funding is assured through to 2030, the sustainability and reach of HPSOP is at risk due to lack of operational support. The program is another platform in achieving NSW Health’s objectives to improve public health across the state.

The statistics are clear: with the aging population growing at an unprecedented rate, programs like HPSOP offer a cost-effective and proactive approach to managing healthcare needs—ultimately reducing strain on public health resources. Supporting this program now may save on healthcare costs associated with untreated chronic illnesses in the future.

By securing its future, we not only honor the work that has been done over deacades, but also commit to a healthier, more informed population of older Australians. I urge the NSW Government and relevant stakeholders to renew their commitment to this impactful initiative and promptly secure an alternative operational home (an "auspice organisation") for HPSOP.

Please join me in advocating for a brighter and healthier future for our older citizens by signing this petition. Your support is vital in showing our collective commitment to maintaining essential health education services for older people in NSW.
