Petition updateSave the GPO in ÉireKeep the Flame: A poem for 1916 by Eva O Brien

"Don’t carve a shop from hallowed stone,
Where rebel hearts once stood alone.
Don’t sell the walls where rifles fired,
Where freedom sang, and dreams inspired.

The GPO is sacred ground,
A citadel where hope was found—
Not marble floors or glass boutique,
But echoes of the strong and meek.

Let Pearse still rise upon those steps,
Where words lit fire, no regrets.
Let Connolly’s blood not fade in vain,
Nor turn his pain to retail gain.

Joseph Plunkett, pale with prayer,
Whispered vows in prison air.
Grace Gifford’s tears were not for sale—
So let no brand name leave a trail.

Margaret Skinnider, bold and bright,
Should not be lost to neon light.
Nor Countess Markievicz, fierce and free,
Reduced to trend or luxury.

Let children learn where martyrs fell,
Let truth be told, and voices swell.
A museum here, where once they stood—
To honour not for profit, but for good.

Show the bullet scars in stone,
The rebel’s cause, the rebel’s tone.
Let history breathe through every hall,
Not advertisements upon the wall.

We owe them more than shopping bags,
Than coffee chains and discount tags.
We owe them stories, songs, and tears,
A living home for vanished years.

So keep the GPO a shrine—
A flame of past in present time.
For Dublin’s heart still beats and knows,
The cost of thrones and soldier’s prose.

No tills. No queues. No checkout line.
Just reverence for a sacred sign.
A nation’s soul cannot be sold—
Their legacy, not bought—but told."
