Save the golf course clubhouse for community use

The Issue

UPDATE:  RBWM has now admitted that there were "errors in the planning process" and agreed to pause the demolition in order to talk with community groups about the buildings future!

Thank you to all who have signed so far and got us to this point - it's a huge step forward -  but its important to keep signing and sharing, as RBWM have not formally withdrawn the decision.

We the undersigned petition the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead to
(i) Enter into formal discussions with Maidenhead Community Centre about operating the former Maidenhead Golf Course clubhouse as a community facility for as long as the site remains available. (ii) Take no irreversible action, including demolition, while that proposal is being considered.
(iii) Set out a clear and reasonable timetable for reaching a decision on creating this new community facility.

Justification:

The Maidenhead Golf Course clubhouse has been empty since the course closed despite groups wanting to use it for the benefit of the whole community.

The council published a decision notice in September stating its intention to demolish the building. However, the planning application allows for temporary uses while the estates are built in phases, potentially giving the building a new purpose in the meantime.

It is a substantial building, set in attractive grounds with extensive parking. It could be serving the people of Maidenhead now and for years to come, instead of sitting locked and awaiting demolition.  Environmental concerns suggest we should save and repurpose buildings wherever possible.

Maidenhead Community Centre has already submitted a written expression of interest to operate the clubhouse as a community facility, working in partnership with local charities and community groups.

The vision includes community classes and activities; weddings, christenings, parties and affordable private hires; a community bar and café; charity meetings and support groups; arts and rehearsal space; and family events making use of the grounds and car park. Every day this building stays locked is a wasted opportunity for Maidenhead.

Maidenhead Community Centre has a proven track record. Over the last decade, its trustees and volunteer team have built and run two successful community centres in Maidenhead — first at York Road and now at 4 Marlow Road. The centre hosts more than 50 regular hirers and welcomes more than 1,100 people every week, ranging from babies attending toddler groups to people in their 80s.

It is a registered charity with experience of running substantial community buildings, a strong financial position and the trust of dozens of established Maidenhead groups.

A perfectly usable building should not be demolished while a credible community organisation is willing and ready to explore new flexible  and affordable uses for the benefit of Maidenhead.
