The issue

The Glenorchy Pool is closing permanently due to safety issues.

Since the 1960’s, many Hobart kids learned to swim there and it has been a source of social life, fitness and fun for thousands over these many decades.

There has been virtually no investment and interest taken in this facility over the years, a sad fact that has led to the current “safety issues”.

What a missed opportunity to have failed to allow this facility to evolve into what it could have been - and still could be - a major drawcard for the City of Glenorchy - an asset for members of its community and beyond.

The pool still had its die hard patrons despite the lack of updates and care. But it could have attracted so many more patrons and paid for itself with appropriate and timely upgrades and maintenance.

These types of suburban facilities can’t be under valued. They enrich life in the local area and give hundreds of people much needed respite in the warmer months.

And more importantly - they promote fitness, fun and wellbeing - all of which contribute to better mental health.

The benefits of outdoor life and fitness are clear and the impact of lack and closure of community venues that facilitate this is a backward step for general health and well being at a time when health services are so stretched and we want PREVENTION rather than cure.

With so much rich history here in Hobart, and icons of times long and more recently passed disappearing -  including some of our oldest and most iconic retailers - it would be a crying shame to see this one go the same way.

We seek state and federal government funding to remediate this much loved and needed community pool - which is patronised by school groups, families, children and adults learning to swim, leisure seekers and those who swim and take aqua classes for fitness, rehabilitation and wellbeing.
