We wanted to share an important update regarding the effort to protect Firestone Plant 1.
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has formally raised concerns about whether the City is complying with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which includes requirements related to preservation of the clock tower and portions of Firestone Plant 1. As a result, demolition activity related to the historic property is paused while the dispute review process is underway.
We are in the process of organizing a public community meeting to discuss the future of this landmark, the decision-making process to date, and the opportunities for adaptive reuse. More details will be shared later this week.
SHPO’s recent action underscores the importance of following established preservation protocols and demonstrates that public engagement and advocacy can make a meaningful difference - especially when transparency, accurate information, and long-term planning are at stake.
We will continue to share updates as next steps take shape. Thank you for standing up for Akron’s history, neighborhoods, and a more creative, community-centered, and environmentally responsible approach to development.
