Field of Dreams Baseball Field on Main Street in Centerville, MA.. I have coached a lot of kids on this field over the years, probably over 100 or so. To me, this is the best field in America to have your kids practice for their baseball team at a young age. The Centerville playground (in need of an upgrade) is right next-door to the field, with the candy store across the street. It simply does not get much better for a young family with multiple little kids in youth sports. This is historic Centerville, Main Street, USA, it is a shame they want to tear this field down to enhance parking… this town doesn’t need more parking, it needs more love to its baseball fields, and playgrounds. All of the youth baseball fields in this town have declined over the years, regardless of how much volunteer work is put into them.  This field does not attract the riffraff, graffiti, drugs, nips, homeless people sleeping in the Dugouts, (like the problem we have in Hyannis)…it does, however, have nostalgia, a right of passage for the local baseball kids,  a respectful neighborhood that keeps a mindful eye on the latest homerun derby score, kickball practices, tennisball baseball, softball practices, Fourth of July activities, etc…Removing a historic Centerville baseball field for parking spaces, clean it up! Just update the field, make a walking track around the entire field, fix the playground, maybe a nice fence with a short porch to keep it fun.  Maybe put in parking for bicycles, scooters, and skateboards, not cars, this will encourage healthier means of transportation for downtown Centerville.…and let America’s pastime be America’s pastime, not a parking lot.  If by chance, this playground being upgraded causes a huge demand for parking, it is not far for a walk from Centerville Elementary School, South Congregational Church, the library,  Our Lady of Victory Church… actually that right there is plenty of parking, in case the masses show up for hide and seek downtown.  This town does not need to do less with the youth baseball fields, it needs to do more, a lot more with it’s baseball fields.. when it does do more to these baseball fields, it should still be affordable for youth programs to use those fields and enjoy that sport.  ( (BHS??).  Please join me by signing this petition in supporting the preservation of this hidden gem of a baseball field for our ballplayers.
