For less than $500,000, in 2016, the couple bought a 7-acre property with 5 acres of healthy, 63-year-old grapevines, plus a home, a working winery and a guest house, in the town of Le Pian-sur-Garonne in Bordeaux’s southern outskirts. Built in the 18th century, “it’s literally a chateau,” says Lawrence, whose long resume includes jobs at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Pahlmeyer and Oregon’s Adelsheim. “We couldn’t have even bought a two-bedroom fixer-upper in Napa for that.”
