The German Shepherds seized following the tragic incident at the Eschol Park property are now facing euthanasia. We are calling for their lives to be spared.

A human life has tragically been lost, and this petition does not seek to minimise that loss or the grief experienced by those who knew him. But taking the lives of these dogs will not bring that person back, nor should the dogs automatically be condemned to death for what occurred on the property they knew as their home and they were protecting it.

These German Shepherds were on their own property. They were protecting their home and territory, doing what protective dogs instinctively understand their role to be responding when an unknown person enters the place they live and protect.

It has also been reported that the man had a mask and gloves with him, raising serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his presence on the property and why he entered it.

The dogs did not leave their property and attack someone walking down a public street. This incident occurred within the territory they regarded as their home.

German Shepherds are naturally loyal, intelligent and protective dogs. Many are specifically kept because of those protective instincts. When someone enters their territory, particularly in unusual circumstances, they cannot understand the situation in the same way a human being can. They respond according to instinct and what they perceive as a threat to their home.

They should not be given a death sentence for protecting the only home they knew.

Euthanasia is permanent. Once these dogs are killed, that decision can never be reversed.

This petition asks Campbelltown City Council and all relevant NSW authorities to STOP the euthanasia of these German Shepherds and spare their lives.

This is not about choosing the lives of dogs over the life of a human being. A person losing their life is a tragedy. It is about questioning whether more lives now need to be lost as a result, particularly the lives of animals that were on their own property and acting according to their protective instincts.

These dogs cannot explain what they perceived that day. They cannot defend themselves from the decision now being made about their lives.

So we need to speak for them.

We urge Campbelltown City Council and the NSW authorities:

DO NOT EUTHANISE THE ESCHOL PARK GERMAN SHEPHERDS.

Allow these dogs to live.
