Why this petition matters

Recently we witnessed a shocking and disheartening accident of electrocution of a Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolku) by an open aluminum cable in Kathalguri village, Kamrup district of Assam, India. The Gibbon had severe injuries including rib fracture, dehydration, skin and teeth burn, as well as burning of internal organs. After being taken for treatment in State Zoo, Guwahati, he died the very next day as he was unable to ingest food.

The Hoolock Gibbon is the only ape found in India and the Western Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) is listed as an endangered mammal in IUCN Red List and in CITES Appendix I. It is also listed in the Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The Western Hoolock gibbon is only found in NE India (south Bank of Brahmaputra in Assam), with its neighbour Bangladesh and Myanmar. In Lower Brahmaputra Valley of Assam, these are only restricted to the Chandubi area, on the south bank of Brahmaputra (Kamrup). Cases of death of Gibbons and other primates (Vulnerable Capped Langurs and Rhesus Macaques) due to electrocution are common in these areas.

Therefore to protect and conserve these last left gibbons, we request you to protect this species by replacing the conventional aluminum cables by insulated/AB cables so as to ascertain that such incidents never happen in future.
