Save the Edwardsville Plum Creek Greenspace

The Issue

UPDATE 2/14/22: This afternoon the sealed bids were opened by Madison County Board Chair Kurt Prenzler. There was only one bid submitted. The bid was by The Staenberg Group and the bid was for $3.868 million. This is the same company that is developing the Orchard Town Center on Illinois Route 159 and Governor's Parkway cady corner from the Plum Creek property. The sale of the land to Staenberg must go through two Madison County committees and pass the full board to go through. We must continue to make our voices heard that we do not want another large shopping center causing congestion, pollution and run off in this area. In addition to all of the county board members, Edwardsville City council members, and Mayor Art Risavy, Timothy Lowe, Senior Vice President of Leasing and Development of the Staenberg Group has been added to this petition as a decision maker we can influence. Please share this petition encouraging Mr. Lowe to work with Edwardsville leaders and not just develop this land into another sea of concrete with patches of high maintenance grass.

Madison County is taking sealed bids to be opened February 14 for the sale of approximately 15 acres of county owned land at the corner of Plum St. and Governor's Parkway. The county has stated it will sell the land to the highest bidder who will pay a $50,000 non-refundable deposit and have 90 days to work with the city of Edwardsville to gain approval for their development plan. The property is currently zoned R2-multi-use commercial (residential/commercial use). After several conversations with city and county officials, it is understood that the City of Edwardsville would not need to approve every plan. For instance, if a single commercial building were to be developed (box store), this would not require Edwardsville's approval, and could thus, be forced upon the community.

This is (our) Madison County taxpayer land that is being sold, and it is the intent of this group to ask the county not to sell this property based only on bid amount, but rather collaborate with the Edwardsville City Planning and the Community at large to consider what development would best serve the community.
