Aug. 18: Complaints about unauthorised construction and illegal filling up of water bodies within the East Calcutta Wetlands peaked between June 2016 and June 2017, according to official records. In response to a query under the right to information act, the East Calcutta Wetlands Management Authority has stated that it has lodged 84 police complaints against unauthorised construction and landfill in the 12,500-hectare protected zone between January 2016 and June 2017. Of these, 57 complaints were lodged in the 12 months since June 2016. This was the highest number of complaints lodged in a 12-month period since the authority came into being in 2006.
