Save the Dual Language Program at Riverhead Central School District

The Issue

The Dual Language Program at Riverhead Central School District has been a beacon of innovation and success since its inception. This program, established by a professional consultant, has been instrumental in fostering bilingual education and cultural understanding in our four early elementary schools. However, the proposed personnel and budget cuts for the 2024/2025 school year threaten to dismantle this valuable program.

The importance of bilingual education cannot be overstated. According to the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages, students who participate in these programs perform better academically and develop enhanced cognitive skills (ACTFL). Moreover, the Native English Speakers and the English Language Learners both gain cultural awareness that prepares them for an increasingly globalized world.

The potential loss of this program would not only affect current students --  who had been promised the program would run through 6th grade -- but also future generations who will miss out on these benefits.

Canceling this program would be "penny wise and pound foolish", especially since our school district has already spent money to design this program and to do parent outreach and marketing in order to gather interested students.

We urge the school board to reconsider their decision and prioritize preserving the Dual Language Program amidst their financial planning.

It is time we stand up for our children's education and ensure they continue to have access to comprehensive language learning opportunities. Please sign this petition to show your support for slowing all of the staff cuts at Riverhead Central School District, and especially for maintaining the Dual Language Program at Riverhead Central School District.

Background for those who wish to learn more about the benefits of Dual Language programs:

Implementing a Dual Language Program (DLP) from kindergarten to 6th grade offers numerous benefits for students, educators, and communities:

1. Bilingual Proficiency: One of the most obvious benefits is that students become proficient in two languages by the time they complete the program. This skill is increasingly valuable in our globalized world and can provide numerous opportunities in education, career, and cultural understanding.

2. Cognitive Development: Research suggests that bilingualism can enhance cognitive abilities such as problem-solving skills, multitasking, and creativity. Children in DLP often demonstrate better attention control, memory, and analytical skills.

3. Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity: By learning another language, students gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. This fosters empathy, respect, and appreciation for diversity.

4. Academic Achievement: Studies have shown that students in dual language programs often outperform their monolingual peers academically. They develop stronger literacy skills in both languages and tend to score higher on standardized tests.

5. Enhanced Communication Skills: Bilingual students have more opportunities to practice communication in different contexts, which improves their language proficiency, confidence, and ability to express themselves effectively.

6. Global Competence: In an increasingly interconnected world, being proficient in two languages prepares students to navigate diverse cultural and linguistic landscapes, fostering global competence and adaptability.

7. Career Opportunities: Bilingualism is an asset in many professions, including business, diplomacy, healthcare, and education. Dual language programs provide students with a competitive edge in the job market and open doors to international career opportunities.

8. Parental Involvement and Engagement: Dual language programs often encourage parental involvement and engagement, as families play a crucial role in supporting their children's language development and academic success.

9. Community Building: DLPs can contribute to building stronger, more cohesive communities by bridging linguistic and cultural divides. They create opportunities for collaboration and exchange among diverse groups within the community.

10. Long-term Benefits: The benefits of dual language programs extend beyond the classroom and have long-term impacts on students' personal, academic, and professional lives. Bilingualism is a lifelong skill that enriches individuals and societies alike.

Overall, a Dual Language Program from kindergarten to 6th grade provides a solid foundation for academic success, cultural competence, and global citizenship, preparing students to thrive in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
