The Issue

We're the operators of Katie's Ice Cream, a beloved spot where families gather to enjoy the homemade ice cream that we make fresh in our shop in Downtown Dickson. Our location is not just about ice cream; it's about community, family, and creating joyful memories.

Recent developments regarding 108 Church Street have raised concerns. We’ve been told by the attorney of the new owners of the parking lot that there will be a new building  constructed on the location of the parking lot north of Katie’s Ice Cream, the parking lot so many Dickson folks use to access their favorite downtown businesses.

Here are the key points we are petitioning for:

Retain parking
Dickson is growing and our progress should keep the best elements of what makes Downtown Dickson really great. Utilizing existing buildings better and increasing what citizens want to see... like parking. If a new office building is being developed perhaps using space in an under-utilized space would be better. (Mulberry Mills, perhaps?)

Preserve the Dickson mural
Will the Dickson mural be covered? Are there plans to save the mural? This mural has become iconic in the community.

Preserve access for Katie’s Ice Cream
It's crucial that any new structures built at this site provide access alongside our establishment. This not only ensures accessibility for all, including wheelchair users and families with strollers, but it also maintains the inclusive spirit of our community.  That's why it deeply concerns us to maintain accessible and safe pathways to the nearby children's playground.

Address fire safety concerns

In addition to accessibility, there's a need to address fire safety concerns. We propose that any new construction be set back at least 10 feet from existing buildings. (Similar to the required setback for the very newest downtown construction at 127 N. Main Street)

This petition isn't just about preserving a path; it's about fostering a safe, welcoming environment for everyone. Join us in urging the City of Dickson to require new construction at 108 Church Street to prioritize accessibility, historic preservation and fire safety.
