Save the DBU Tennis Program! Say No to the Cut, Yes to Opportunity.

Dallas Baptist University has announced the transition of its men’s and women’s tennis programs to club sport status starting in the 2025–2026 academic year. While framed as a transition, this decision effectively eliminates both programs as official collegiate sports, jeopardizing the futures of numerous student-athletes who have dedicated themselves to representing DBU on the court.
For these student-athletes, college tennis is far more than just a game. It is a vital pathway for personal growth, fostering leadership skills, promoting academic excellence, and encouraging a healthy and disciplined lifestyle.
Many chose DBU specifically because its tennis program offered them the opportunity to develop both as athletes and as individuals. Now, they face the disheartening prospect of losing their scholarships, their teams, and the supportive community that has been instrumental in their growth as students and citizens.
Under the dedicated leadership of Head Coach Wade Morgan, who enters his eighth season at the helm, the DBU men's and women's tennis teams have achieved significant success. In his seven seasons, Coach Morgan has amassed an impressive 194 wins (314 career wins), mentored two NCAA All-Americans, guided 28 All-Conference selections, and fostered academic excellence resulting in six ITA All-Scholar Academic Team awards. Notably, the DBU Women’s Team, under Coach Morgan’s guidance, secured a NCCAA Women’s Team Championship in 2018 and recently achieved an appearance in the Lone Star Conference Finals and the NCAA Regional Tournament in 2024.
Furthermore, the DBU Women’s Team has consistently achieved winning seasons for the past seven consecutive years under his direction. Coach Morgan's commitment and the teams' consistent success demonstrate the value and potential of these programs.
The decision to eliminate these thriving programs disregards the hard work and dedication of these student-athletes and Coach Morgan. It also overlooks the positive impact that collegiate athletics has on the overall university environment and the development of well-rounded individuals.
Therefore, we urgently implore the DBU administration to reconsider this decision. We request a genuine exploration of all possible alternatives to ensure the continuation of these valuable programs.
By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with these student-athletes, recognizing the importance of education, equity, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams. Let us collectively urge Dallas Baptist University to maintain its commitment to these young men and women and ensure that tennis does not disappear from the Patriot athletic campus.
