The issue

The Crown and Anchor Hotel is under threat.
The South Australian pub currently provides live music most nights of the week.

The site was purchased by the current owners Karidis Corp in 2016. A development application has recently been submitted in March 2024, proposing to demolish the hotel and build 19 storeys of student accommodation on the site.

The Crown & Anchor Hotel - the Cranker - is more than just a building. It's a symbol of our community, our history, and our love for live music.

It is a church to many. A safe haven, a senate, a party, a listening ear, a teacher, a delightful ale. The hotel serves as a meeting place, a melting pot of society where people from all walks of life come together. Live music is our common language.

Live music contributes over $1 billion annually to Australia's economy. The Crown & Anchor Hotel plays an integral role in the South Australian music and arts industries, hosting live performances 7 days a week and nurturing local talents as they learn their craft.

The potential demolition or change in use in the building would see a curtain fall on the proud performance and live music culture our South Australian Labor government (led by Premier Peter Malinauskas) seeks to recognise, protect and propel as part of Adelaide’s ongoing role as a UNESCO City of Music. We seek a solution that actively demonstrates our State’s ongoing commitment to the UNESCO listing.

The Crown and Anchor has significant heritage value (recently celebrating the 170th anniversary of their first operations in 1853), and also immeasurable value as a current cultural icon. Current State heritage and planning laws don’t offer sufficient protection to ensure institutions like the Cranker will live on for future generations. We need to change this.

Lets stand together against any attempts at demolition or change in use that would rob us of this invaluable South Australian asset. Sign this petition today and help preserve the Crown & Anchor Hotel!
