The Issue

The Crivitz School Native Prairie is more than just an expanse of untamed land; it is an indispensable educational resource and ecological haven. As someone who deeply values education and the environment, I have witnessed first-hand how  native prairies act as dynamic outdoor classrooms. They offer students unique hands-on learning experiences that aren’t possible within the confines of traditional classrooms, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological systems and boosting ecological literacy.

Beyond its educational benefits, the Crivitz School Native Prairie is a vital sanctuary for biodiversity. In an era where biodiversity loss due to habitat destruction is escalating, prairies provides crucial refuge for numerous plant and animal species, including essential pollinators whose populations are in decline. Pollinators contribute to the reproduction of a majority of flowering plant species, which is vital for food production and ecosystem health.

A recent school board decision was made to mow down this ecological sanctuary, undermining both its educational value and its environmental significance. Such actions could have dire consequences not only for the native species that reside there but also for students who gain invaluable knowledge about ecology and conservation through their interactions with prairies.

Preserving the Crivitz School Native Prairie is an investment in both present and future generations. We owe it to our students and our community to maintain this unique resource as a living laboratory and ecological refuge. There are alternatives to mowing that align with both educational outcomes and ecological stewardship.

Therefore, I urge the decision-makers at the Crivitz School District to halt any plans for mowing and to explore alternatives such as encouraging teachers to engage students in educational stewardship activities that further reinforce their learning and personal connection to nature.

Join me in saving this irreplaceable prairie by signing this petition. Together, we can safeguard a vital piece of our community’s natural heritage for the benefit of education, biodiversity, and future generations. Please sign and help us protect our Crivitz School Native Prairie.

The Crivitz School Board has discussed the state of the native prairie multiple times over the past 5 or more years. During the construction of the added tech ed space, the prairie was used by contractors for their trailers and materials. As construction ended, the buildings and grounds committee discussed what should be done with that space. The buildings and grounds committee asked that grass be planted, for now, and that the district look into making the space something pollinator-friendly. Due to the location of the area, irrigation is being priced out also to keep the space active during times of less rain. So while it will not be a native prairie, we are still looking at making it bee- and butterfly-friendly.
