Save the Cottonwood pool in Richardson, Texas
The Issue
The Cottonwood pool is a beautiful gem in our community. The City of Richardson plans to close it after the 2028 summer season and replace it with a sprayground, which could require as much water and maintenance and would not be a destination on its own. The Glenwood pool sprayground "is down for maintenance every other day, between chemicals issues, water pressure or parts breaking," per one of the lifeguards. It's easy enough for kids to run through their own sprinklers at home, and Campbell Green in Dallas has a spray ground and is only 8 minutes away, and is free.
The $2 pool admission for Richardson residents could easily be raised to $4 to cover some of the shortfall.
Since finding this wonderful hidden treasure a few years ago, I swim twice every weekend. It's tranquil, nestled amidst the trees, with a separate diving pool, great lifeguards and music. It's great exercise, relaxing and I feel great afterwards! And it's just 4 minutes from my house. It's also the home of city swim teams. The pool is underutilized, but mostly because of a lack of awareness. Only the Heights Family Aquatic Center is well promoted, and the Cottonwood pool is rather hidden down away from the entrance of Cottonwood Park, and completely covered up and invisible during the twice a year Cottonwood Festival. When I talk to people about the pool they invariably didn't even know it was there. And of all the neighborhood pools, this is in the most underprivileged area, that needs it the most.
The plan to replace the pool dismisses its value to the community, particularly to those who live nearby and who use it often. The survival of this pool could depend on us taking action now to demonstrate its importance to the community and its role in supporting healthy lifestyles and providing an inclusive recreation space. The decision is made, but we hope to get them to revisit it.
So please join me in urging the City of Richardson to reconsider their plans and help us save this valuable community asset. The city of Richardson prides itself on its amenities and offerings for the community, to help attract residents and businesses. This is one of those amenities.
