A proposal has been published by the Vale of Glamorgan Council to demolish the old Colcot Sports Centre site (which houses Colcot Amateur Boxing Club, the Dance School, the Welsh language nursery (Cylch Meithrin) and the sand-filled ATP hockey pitch) and replace this with housing.  Building these houses is intended to fund a new changing facility at the Buttrills Fields.  The newer sports centre at the Colcot site would remain, along with the six “cages” which serve mini football.  However, due to the proposed housing development, the parking facilities at the current Colcot site (which are already maximised for mini football) would be heavily reduced. The proposed facilities at the Buttrills would see parking increase from its existing 24 spaces to 204, causing a drastic impact on the infrastructure and congestion in North Walk and Colcot Road.  

The Council are yet to publish any specific proposals for the housing development on the existing Colcot Sports Centre site. This is in addition to the 140 houses proposed to replace the Cardiff and Vale College building on Colcot Road which is also being demolished.

We all know that the existing changing facilities at the Colcot Sports Centre site need to be renewed, particularly to reflect the increasing demand for women and girls’ football, but given the existing infrastructure which is in place to serve this site we believe alternative proposals to those published by the Council need to be considered in consultation with the public. No local residents have been consulted about these proposals as yet (6th April 2024).
