We demand that Telford and Wrekin Council ensure that the art deco frontage of the former Clifton cinema building in Wellington is retained and that they refuse any planning application that does not provide an arts and community use for the premises.
The Issue
The Former Clifton Cinema in Wellington has been sold to an unknown (at time of writing) buyer, despite the fact that Save The Clifton a very vocal and active group campaigning to save the iconic features of the building and develop it into an Arts and Community Centre. www.theclifton.org
Save The Clifton have drawn up detailed plans to provide theatre, cinema, venue, gallery, workshop, cafe and retail space. It is intended that the Art and community centre would be independent and self financing. The group have raised over £35,000 and instigated a sell out programme of film and performance.
The area of Wellington unlike other towns and areas in the borough has no distinct community centre and the failure of the civic centre to provide new community space (although initially promised in the adjacent council owned Edgbaston House property), has only served to heighten this omission, especially given that Madeley, St Georges and Dawley have each recently received support to save local buildings for community use.
Save the Clifton has received generous and ongoing support from members of the public, local councillors, business, institutions and celebrities, attracted national press coverage and received grants to continue the project. Save The Clifton is also nominated as one of this years Wellington Mayors charities. Despite the groundswell of interest, there has been no inclination on behalf of the Telford & Wrekin Borough Council to intervene or enable this popular and well supported charity to secure the building.
Why Save The Clifton as an Arts and Community centre?
• To save an iconic, local landmark building.
• Provide performance, exhibition, workshop, rehearsal and meeting space.
• Regeneration of Wellington town centre.
• Enhance the night time economy.
• Increase local tourism.
• Increase footfall for local business.
• Increase community pride.
• Improve the arts and community offer for local people.
• Put money into the towns economy through direct spending.
• Employment of full-time and part-time workers, and independent contractors.
• Serve education programs to the children of Telford and the Wrekin.
• Increase opportunities for cross cultural communication.
• Generate money from individual contributions from residents of Telford and Wrekin and beyond.
• Provide a focal point for information and community involvement.
