We are proud to share that our Founder and Trustee, The Chartwell Cancer Trust, Michael Douglas, has been featured in the local Newshopper sharing his personal perspective on the future of inpatient cancer care at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).
In 2003, Michael was treated for leukaemia at the Chartwell Unit at PRUH. The care he received there saved his life. That experience led him to establish The Chartwell Cancer Trust, committing more than two decades to strengthening local cancer services.
Michael believes it remains his duty to speak openly and to invite others to do the same - to help ensure that future decisions about cancer care are grounded in patient safety, access, and the lived realities of our community.
In his article, Michael reflects on:
The vital importance of dedicated inpatient haematology cancer beds at PRUH
- Why care close to home is fundamental for elderly and vulnerable patients
- The impact that long journeys to Denmark Hill could have on immunocompromised patients and their families
- The voices of almost 30,000 residents who have already signed the petition to protect the Chartwell inpatient ward
- He writes not simply as a Trustee, but as a former patient who understands what local inpatient care means to families in our community.
With the NHS engagement process now open, this is a crucial moment for our community.
