Dear Supporters
We have surpassed the 200 signature milestone, thanks to your support. We have had many families who have come forward to advise that their loved ones were buried at the cemetery.
I would like to appeal to all family members of the deceased to provide me with their contact details. In addition, it would be important that they undertake to draw up sworn affidavits regarding their forefathers and their burials at the cemetery. Please send whatever information you have to savethecemetery@gmail.com.
To understand the gravity of the legal and ethical transgressions, I have attached a picture of the Naidoo family’s tombstone which was damaged and then eventually demolished. In the background of the tombstone, you will see stockpiles of sand or rubble which were used to totally flatten and destroy the burial ground.
Lastly, it is sad to note that government will spend around R10 Million to build a monument at the beachfront to commemorate the arrival of the 1860 Indentured Indian Labourers, yet nothing is being done while a historic heritage site like the Cato Manor Cemetery lies in ruins. This is hypocrisy on the part of government and our so-called Indian Leaders.
We will not rest until the Cato Manor Indian Cemetery & Crematorium Site is saved, the container depot is removed, and all parties who were responsible for this dastardly act are brought to book and are made to pay for their deeds.
Yours truly
Kuben Samie
