Dear Castro Theatre Conservancy supporters,
The good news is that we don’t have to turn out to City Hall this week. The October 5 and 6 hearings have been postponed, at Another Planet’s request, to December 8, 2022.
As a reminder, the hearing by the Historic Preservation Commission is to consider revising the Castro Theatre’s landmark designation and the appropriateness of Another Planet’s plans for changes in the theatre (including removal of the orchestra floor seats); and the other hearing, by the Planning Commission, concerns the sale of alcohol and a change of use from a movie theatre to a live music venue. We will be back in touch with you before that date about attending the hearings and submitting public comments, virtually or in person.
Along with District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman’s office, we have asked that the landmark designation be considered at a separate, and earlier, meeting. We don’t know why Another Planet requested the delay – almost certainly because they did not expect their proposals, including the removal of the orchestra floor slope and seats, to be approved. We hope that they will use the time of the delay to develop a plan for the theatre more appropriate for film, and an operating plan more responsive to the community’s needs, including a focus on LGBTQ+ programming.
We’ll keep you informed as the new dates approach. If you have not already done so, you can sign up to stay informed, email your representatives, and sign our petition here.
Thank you for your love for the Castro Theatre!
