Save the Carriage Horses

The Issue

I urge individuals who feel passionate about saving the carriage horses in NYC from abuse and harsh working conditions to sign this petition directed towards outlawing the carriage industry in NYC.

Horses do not belong in a city environment, where they are surrounded by pollution and frightening loud noises. There are multiple drivers such as Saverio Colarusso and Ian McKeever who have been caught abusing their horses. Colarusso made his horse Blondie work with an injury that made her limp for 4 days before a police officer caught him in central park. McKeever's horse Ryder collapsed from exhaustion near Hell's Kitchen. When asked, Mckeever lied and said that Ryder was 13 years old when he was in fact 28. After Ryder fell, his owner was seen yelling at Ryder to “get up”. These are just a fraction of the examples of horses getting hurt and collapsing due to their atrocious working conditions.

There is a promising alternative to horse-drawn carriages, electric carriages. The benefits of electric carriages are endless: drivers will be able to go to places in the city not allowed with horses, they will make more money by not having to pay for horses' expenses, and it is a safer option for pedestrians. Olde Mount Dora Carriage Company has implemented this practice. This carriage company is located in Florida and has been using electric carriages as an alternative to horse-drawn ones. They are a successful example how the carriage industry can transition to working without horses. Feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, recognizing the benefits of refraining from working with horses.

The practice of horse-drawn carriages is a dangerous and must be stopped. Horses are getting hurt, and we can not allow this to continue any longer. Please sign this petition to make the city street safer. Be a part of the solution for providing the horses with a nicer life.
