Save the Graduate History Program
The Issue
Ball State University has suspended the History Graduate Program. The program will be suspended upon the completion of the Spring 2025 semester and no new graduate students will be admitted in that time. No official announcement has been made (as of 10/7), however, the History Grad Students were made aware of this development by an undergraduate. The Graduate Students were not apart of this decision and were shocked and saddened by this sudden development. This program has meant so much to the current Grads and alumni.
The History Grad Students urge you to sign this petition to save our program. Showing your support for the History Students supports the Grad Program and history as a subject. An attack on the history program is especially concerning, considering the nationwide attack on the humanities. The History Department will not be the last program cut, but saving might save future programs.
History is a cornerstone subject. It teaches critical thinking, writing, and research skills. As one of the few programs to offer a terminal Master's degree, this is an ideal option for students who do not want a Ph.D. A Master's in history can be used for various careers, including teaching, law, government, museums, and many more. The Master's in History at Ball State has been a leading program offering concentrations in history teaching, ethnohistory, digital history, and more. Graduate students from this program have found employment across the country in museums, archives, universities, and doing historical research.
