For us, railfans, this loss really feels like a bereavement and it is okay to cry about the loss of the 455s. Although on the cards for the last eight years and we knew that this was coming, the loss of these beloved trains will be a huge shock.

As mentioned in yesterday's update, nobody under the age of 40 living in South West London will have known a time without the BREL Class 455 electric multiple units so this is an unprecedented change for us all.

As a commuter, I understand the demand and desire for passenger comfort and experience which is brand new rolling stock, however these workhorses should never be forgotten and for us they are just as important as the steam engines.

After this month, only the Class 450 Desiro trains and the Class 159 DMU units will remain in service of all the rolling stock seen in this video from March 2004, so once again, thank you all.

Even if just a driving cab from a Class 455 is preserved whilst everything else is scrapped, that's still better than the whole fleet being mothballed.
