The Issue

A $16 million NYS Department of Transportation project will bring a "road diet" and complete streets redesign to a stretch of US Route 1 (Boston Post Road) in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, with construction slated to begin in Spring 2028. [1, 2]

Proposed Changes
Lane Configuration: Reduces travel lanes to a single lane in each direction, plus a shared center turning lane.
Speed and Safety: Standardizes the speed limit at 30 mph to reduce left-turn congestion and improve overall safety.
Infrastructure: Adds dedicated bike lanes on both sides of the roadway, stretching from Dillon Road to Hornidge Road.

We, the merchants,  business owners and residents of Larchmont and Mamroneck, need to take action to save Boston Post Road, the most vital stretch of road in our community.  These proposed changes will not only place undue hardships on travelers, significantly increase local travel times, create havoc on the arteries feeding into the Boston Post Road, and create many other hazardous obstacles and impediments to travel.  

This proposed measure is illogical and severly detrimental to our quality of life.

“State Senator Shelley Mayer 235 Mamaroneck Avenue Ste 400 White Plains, NY 10605 Assemblyman Steve Otis 222 Grace Church Street, 305 Port Chester, NY 10573 September 21, 2026 Dear Friend, Thank you for your comments on the Route 1 Resurfacing Project process. Your comments are welcome and timely as the process to comment on developing a plan is still underway and is driven by local goals and preferences. The draft plan released for purposes of public comment this fall was developed by The NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) in response to comments they received from Larchmont and Mamaroneck residents. In 2024 when DOT introduced the Route 1 Resurfacing Project, they indicated that the scope of the project "is not pre-scripted by NYSDOT" and that community engagement and input was an important part of the process. DOT held public meetings on November 22, 2024 (Stakeholders Meeting at Town Center), June 5, 2025 (Open House at Mamaroneck High School), and April 16, 2026 (Open House at Mamaroneck High School). In addition, members of the public and the three municipalities and two school districts have shared comments and questions with DOT directly. The public participation process in designing the plan has not been completed; no plan has been finalized. In fact, all three municipalities will be receiving comments from the community about sections of the project under their jurisdiction this fall and sharing their recommendations with NYSDOT regarding the modifications under consideration as part of this process. The purpose of circulating the draft plans is to invite comment and reaction. Now is the time for additional public, municipal, and school district comments. Towards that goal, the two villages and the town are seeking public comments from all. Each municipality will again be receiving comments, reviewing proposals, conferring with their traffic consultants, and making sense of what the final plan should include based upon that feedback. Through this process, each municipality will provide DOT with their recommendation and comments on the specific modifications in the draft plan. Two themes heard often in discussions on the Route 1 project are worthy of mention.A suggested modification at one location within the roadway may or may not make sense at another location along Route 1 or even within the same municipality. There is no one-size-fits-all for these discussions. DOT recognizes that different locations within the corridor will require different design solutions. Secondly, throughout the process, traffic, pedestrian, and student safety have certainly been part of the discussion. The fatalities on Mamaroneck Avenue and other incidents on the Boston Post Road corridor in recent years have prompted many to seek safety improvements as part of any plan. The challenge for all will be to address all the needs in a workable and balanced manner. Increased traffic volumes are just one of the issues any suggested modifications will have to be judged against. Many competing interests shape any roadway modification. The three municipalities will play an important role in helping arrive at the best plan. To that end, we invite you to review the April draft plans intended for public consideration and comment, and share your views with the two villages and town to assist in shaping their priorities. Our belief is that the best judges of what modifications will work and will not work along this important roadway will be found at the local level. The recommendations of each municipality will hold great weight with NYSDOT as they proceed through this next phase of public comment on a Route 1 Resurfacing Plan.
