◆Support the Preservation of a Modern Masterpiece by Kenzo Tange
In 1964, world-renowned architect Kenzo Tange designed the Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium—a breathtaking fusion of tradition and modernism, affectionately known as “the Boat Gym.”
Today, this cultural treasure is under threat of demolition.
Yet a clear and inspiring alternative now exists:
A citizen-led initiative has proposed a complete preservation and adaptive reuse plan—fully funded by private sources, with no cost to the public. The gymnasium would be reborn as a cultural hub and international destination, celebrating Tange’s legacy in the very prefecture where it began.
This is not just a local issue—it’s a global responsibility.
Architectural institutions across the world—Harvard GSD, MoMA in New York, and the University of Illinois, among others—have called for its protection. They recognize what’s at stake: the loss of one of the last surviving large-scale works by a master of 20th-century architecture.
We have the plan.
We have the international support.
Now we need your voice.
Please sign the petition to help preserve this irreplaceable cultural landmark—so that future generations, in Japan and beyond, can continue to be inspired by it.
