The Issue

The Berlin Elementary School mural is more than just paint on bricks; it is a vital piece of our community's essence. For decades, it has been an emblem of local history and culture, reminding us and future generations of our shared journey. Yet, this cherished mural is now threatened with destruction—a decision that ignores its value and heritage.

The mural was lovingly created by students, teachers, and community members, each stroke on the wall a testament to their hopes and dreams. It encapsulates moments of joy, struggle, and growth, making it not just a piece of art but a powerful narrative of our town's evolving identity. Its removal would erase a tangible connection to our past, a past that offers lessons and insights about who we were and who we aspire to be.

History isn't always easy to confront, and sometimes it doesn't align perfectly with contemporary viewpoints. However, erasing it doesn't change the past—it deprives us of the opportunity to engage with it constructively. This mural opens up dialogues around the complexities of our history, fostering understanding and unity in our community.

In a time when cultural landmarks are increasingly at risk, protecting the Berlin Elementary School mural serves as a demonstration of our commitment to preserving the art and stories that define us. We are not advocating to ignore progress but to remember without destruction, to discuss without erasure, and to honor without compromising heritage.

We propose a balanced approach: preserving the mural while offering educational programs that provide contextual understanding of its themes and symbols. Such initiatives can serve as an educational tool for students and citizens, promoting discussions that bridge generational and cultural divides.

Let us come together to stand up for this historical artwork. Join us in urging the Berlin School District and School Board to appreciate this mural for what it truly is—a cornerstone of our community’s identity—and to prevent any action that would lead to its removal, painting over, or destruction.

Sign this petition to ensure that the mural at Berlin Elementary School is preserved for future generations to enjoy and learn from. Our community's history depends on it.

Responded
“Thank you for reaching out. This is a matter that has been discussed by the full School Board at our last couple of meetings. Guidance was also given for interested community members to form a committee to explore options for preserving the mural. The committee’s ideas will be brought back to the School Board for further discussion. At this time, I believe the best response would need to come through the School Board as a whole rather than from an individual board member. [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
