Hi Nicole,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and compassionate email regarding the removal of beaver dams and lodges. We deeply appreciate your concern for wildlife and your advocacy for humane solutions.

We fully agree that the use of traps and lethal methods not only poses significant risks to non-target animals but also fails to address the underlying issue, as new beavers will eventually move into the area. It's crucial to prioritize non-lethal, humane methods that are both effective and sustainable in managing beaver populations and mitigating any damage caused by their activities.

There are several humane strategies that can be employed to manage beaver activity without causing harm to the animals:

·       Flow devices: Installing devices like the Beaver Deceiver or pond levelers can help control water levels and prevent flooding without removing the beavers or their dams.

·       Tree protection: Wrapping trees with wire mesh or painting them with a mixture of sand and paint can deter beavers from gnawing on them, protecting valuable vegetation.

·       Culvert protection: Devices can be installed to prevent beavers from blocking culverts, ensuring proper water flow.

If dam removal is absolutely necessary, it’s important to do so carefully and humanely, ideally outside of the beaver birthing season to avoid orphaning kits.

Thank you for your commitment to protecting beavers and all wildlife. Together, we can promote coexistence and ensure the well-being of these remarkable animals.

Warmly,

Richard Zisser (He/Him)
