Petition updateSave the Barn, Save the Farm!DEP cites Brightfarms for violation of Clean Streams Law in Bucks County, PA
Patterson Farm Preservation, Inc. 501c3
Nov 13, 2016
On November 8, 2016 the Department of Environmental Protection investigated a red liquid emanating from the Brightfarms hydroponic complex in Bucks County, PA. The NY-based company was cited for discharge of "industrial waste water" onto Lower Makefield Township's historic Patterson Farm. Investigators noted the unlawful activity violates the Clean Streams Law. DEP investigator advised Brightfarms they must provide records of water samples for the past 6 months and use an alternative disposal method for their industrial waste water, such as hauling offsite, until approvals are obtained for a permanent method that complies with the law. Township officials have requested a representative from Brightfarms attend the next Board of Supervisors meeting to respond to questions about this disturbing violation. Brightfarms built their controversial 55,000 sq. ft. greenhouse complex on preserved Open Space land leased from Lower Makefield Township. The Bucks County Open Space Review Board opposed the construction of the facility at the site. The adjacent farmland is farmed by local farmers who are not affiliated with Brightfarms. Since Brightfarms began operating at the site, citizens have raised concerns over extreme light pollution, excessive water consumption, chemical storage, trash containment, permitting compliance, rental fees, destruction of farmland, and encroachment by Brightfarms onto other tenants leased area. A township supervisors meeting will be held on Wednesday November 16th at 7:30 pm at the Lower Makefield Township Municipal Building, 1100 Edgewood Road, Yardley, PA 19067. Members of the public are invited to attend and voice their concerns. As of Friday November 11, the management of #Brightfarms was unavailable for comment.
