The Issue

The art programs at PennWest California are more than just courses in a curriculum; they are the heartbeat of our campus and a vibrant thread in the fabric of our community. Every year, our art department opens its doors to high school students, inviting them to experience the magic of our plays, the thrill of our football games accompanied by our talented band, and the creative joy of our artistry workshops. These activities not only enrich the lives of our students but also inspire young, aspiring artists from the surrounding areas. People are drawn to our programs because they are proud of what we achieve.

However, the cherished art programs at PennWest California are now under threat of being sunsetted and eliminated from our campus. This decision would be a grave disservice to not only our current students and faculty but also to the future generations of artists that look to PennWest California as a beacon of creativity and hope.

Art programs provide essential skills that extend beyond traditional academic subjects. They foster critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness—qualities that are imperative in today’s world. The elimination of these programs would mean stifling the growth of young minds that are yet to explore and contribute to the arts.

According to a study by the National Endowment for the Arts, students involved in arts programs are more likely to excel academically and become active, engaged members of their communities. They are three times more likely to earn a Bachelor’s degree and four times more likely to participate in student government. These programs serve as a vital stepping stone for success, both academically and personally.

We cannot allow them to eliminate these programs. By doing so, PennWest California can preserve its rich legacy in the arts and continue to be a place where creativity flourishes.

Join us in our fight to save the art programs at PennWest California. Your signature can make a difference and send a powerful message to the decision-makers that art is not just an option, but a necessity for a thriving, dynamic campus and community. Please sign the petition and help us preserve the arts for future generations.
