Save the Amazon Rainforest!

Save the Amazon Rainforest!

The Issue

The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world and one of our planet’s main lungs, but due to deforestation this beautiful ecosystem is losing 10,000 acres a day. The Amazon is considered to be one of the most biodiverse rainforests in the world, housing about 10% of all the species on Earth. The loss of the Amazon doesn’t only affect the people and wildlife that live there but it affects the entire world by producing 20% of global oxygen. Even though the Amazon covers 9 countries, 60% is in Brazil. This means Brazil has a central role in reducing deforestation. In 2012 Brazil reduced deforestation rates by 84%, however since then deforestation rates have steadily increased.

One of the biggest reasons for their success was a nationwide program made to decrease deforestation that was made in 2004 but after 2012 it hasn’t been that impactful.

With this petition the goal is to persuade the Brazilian government to reenact the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the legal Amazon (PPCDAm). The goal is to make this action have the same impact it had from 2004 to 2012, since in the last decade deforestation has continued increasing to the point we´re at today.
