Save the Abeille Flandre salvage tug
Le problème
The Abeille Flandre is a 63 meter/ 210ft long deep see salvage and rescue tug. She and her sister ship Abeille Languedoc, took part in sometime spectacular rescue missions off the western french coast. She entered in service in 1978 and made history for the sheer number of disasters and accidents she helped avoid. Without her, 21 oil slicks would have soiled French and british coasts. Appearing on many TV and book covers, she built up a strong reputation both in France and in Europe.
(English subtitles available)
Despite this unmatched record, despite 44 years of faithful service and a good repair condition, the owner, the Econocom Group, has sent her to the breakers.
The demolition of the Abeille Flandre would be a 3-fold disaster for our recent maritime history.
- It would deprive us of a unique witness of all our endeavours to secure the seas over 4 decades.
- It would deprive us of a ship that represented the top of the naval architecture of the 1970s
- It would send to the breakers a perfectly serviceable ship
LET US STOP THIS WASTE!
Fo this reason, the undersigned request the "LES ABEILLES INTERNATIONAL" and " NAVALEO" groups to :
- Delay demolition to allow a preservation group to establish itself and set-up a serious preservation project.
- Support the ongoing step to list her as a heritage ship with the French Ministry of Culture.
The undersigned also request the aid of the French government to support the preservation of the Abeille Flandre with the following two measures :
- Assist in providing a mooring or a space inland
Assist in the listing of Abeille Flandre as an Heritage ship of historic value.
The Abeille Flandre is a noble and faithful servant of our country. She deserves a better fate , for the memory of all the sailors who, sometimes at the cost of their lives, work in order to make our seas safer.
The Abeille Flandre should be visible, available and accessible to everyone :
- To spark a vocation with our children
- To show how demanding being seaman is
- To remind us how the sea is dangerous yet vital for our country
