Save Tŷ Hyll (The Ugly House)
The Issue
Tŷ Hyll (The Ugly House) in Betws‑y‑Coed is at risk of being lost to private ownership.
The Snowdonia Society has announced that this beloved landmark will be sold at auction, and the community is devastated.
Tŷ Hyll is not just a building, it is a symbol of Snowdonia’s heritage, folklore and identity. Generations of locals and visitors know it as a place to get a taste of homemade Welsh food, to experience the peace of its grounds and get lost in it's beauty. The woodland, bee garden, and tearoom have been cared for with love and dedication, by the staff there that go above and beyond for all who visit.
If sold into private hands, we risk losing:
- Public access to the house and gardens
- The bee‑friendly woodland and conservation work
- The tearoom that has become part of the community fabric
- A unique cultural landmark recognised across Wales and beyond
We, the undersigned, call on:
- Snowdonia Society to pause the sale and explore community‑focused alternatives
- CADW to urgently assess Tŷ Hyll for heritage listing or protection
- National Trust Cymru to consider acquiring or partnering to safeguard the site
- Conwy County Borough Council to support conservation measures
- Members of the Senedd to raise this issue and advocate for intervention
We urge all relevant bodies to work together to protect this landmark for future generations.
Please sign to help save Tŷ Hyll.
