Save Sycamore Library!
The Issue
UNT Libraries has publicly stated that Sycamore Library and the other departments housed in Sycamore Hall will be relocated over a two-year period, while also stating that the Board of Regents has yet to announce plans for the site.
For almost a century, Sycamore Hall has been part of UNT's campus and student life. For 89 years, it has served generations of UNT students, and today it is home to a library with private and quiet study spaces that students continue to use every day.
Sycamore sits in the center of many of UNT's STEM buildings, including the Life Sciences Complex, Chemistry Building, Physics Building, Hickory Hall, and the General Academic Building. For students taking biology, chemistry, physics, math, and laboratory courses, Sycamore provides a nearby place to study, work between classes, prepare for exams, and find some quiet during a busy day on campus.
The future of Sycamore Hall should not be decided without transparency and student input. Before the library is relocated, students deserve to know what is planned for the building, what will happen to its study spaces and resources, and whether preserving Sycamore Library has been considered.
Most importantly, students deserve to have a voice in what happens to the spaces we use.
If you have ever studied at Sycamore, stopped there between classes, prepared for an exam, or simply appreciated having a quiet place on this side of campus, please stand with us and help save Sycamore Library.
Clarification: An earlier version of this petition stated that UNT's College of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics was confirmed to be replacing Sycamore Library. While this was based on information received directly, there is no public or official record confirming what will replace the library.
