Save Swifts: Make Swift brick nests a requirement in Nottingham’s new developments

Save Swifts: Make Swift brick nests a requirement in Nottingham’s new developments
The Issue
HELP SAVE OUR SWIFTS FROM VANISHING FROM OUR SKIES.
HOMES FOR SWIFTS IN NOTTINGHAM.
We want Nottingham City Council to make it mandatory for Swift bricks to be included in all new development projects.
A Swift brick is a nest box the size and shape of a building brick. It's cheap and easy to install (replacing a standard clay brick with a Swift brick) and this simple 'brick switch' will make a huge difference in helping this red listed bird. Nottingham City Council can make this simple change to their planning policy.
Every year, Swifts travel seven thousand miles to nest in our towns and cities - including here in Nottingham. But modern buildings are shutting them out. With no gaps or eaves to nest in, Swifts are being left homeless. And it’s not just wildlife being affected – our communities across Nottingham are watching a bird they love vanish from their skies.
We’re at a tipping point. If we don’t act now, another generation of Swifts could vanish from Nottingham’s skies - and our children and future generations will grow up in a city where these incredible birds become a fading memory. But it’s not too late. With one simple planning policy change, Nottingham can help Swifts recover and set an example for cities across the UK. Sign and share this petition to show Nottingham City Council that the time to act is now - before we lose these magnificent birds for good.
Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by 68% since 1995. If this continues, we risk losing them altogether. But there’s a simple fix: Swift bricks - small, affordable, permanent nesting spaces that fit into the walls of new buildings. If the City Council adopts a new Swift brick policy, requiring developers to include these bricks in every new build, we can help towards reversing this decline. If they don’t, our summer skies will fall silent and the quiet disappearance of these birds will continue - unnoticed. This is entirely preventable.
That’s why we’re acting now. Over 500 Nottingham primary school pupils have already written letters to Nottingham City Council. They want commitment to change. Nottingham has a chance to lead the way and become a truly wildlife-friendly city and it starts with making space in our homes for swifts to nest.
Sign this petition to ask Nottingham City Council to require Swift bricks in all new developments - and help protect a future where people and nature can thrive together.
