Save Storefront Parking in Historic Downtown Apex, North Carolina
The Issue
Note: This is a free platform and we are NOT requesting money.
We proudly support Historic Downtown Apex (NC) and its businesses. We actively promote downtown businesses other than our own. We believe that Downtown Apex is thriving, vibrant, and appeals to all ages. It is rare that a storefront is vacant. We believe that Historic Downtown Apex makes an emotional connection with people, reminding them of their hometown or of a simpler time. It is a place where you can know and interact with merchants by name.
Parking is very important to ALL businesses, and Downtown Apex does not have enough of it. We believe it is important to maintain the authenticity of Downtown Apex, by retaining existing storefront parking, not causing further parking challenges by eliminating or reducing it. We believe storefront parking is an important option to have in addition to more remote parking.
We believe storefront parking spaces are for car parking, for the benefit of ALL businesses. We believe that using parking spaces for eating spaces results in extreme underuse of space during bad weather all year and when restaurants are not open. We believe there is ample outdoor dining space on sidewalks outside of restaurants, which was the usual practice prior to Covid, and when restaurants leased their buildings. Continuing to block spaces for eating, at a time when restaurants can operate at full capacity, is discriminating against retailers and patrons who have difficulty walking longer distances, whether it is due to a disability (temporary or permanent), families with young children, older shoppers, and single women fearful of walking alone at night.
We believe that having the required orange barricades surrounding parking spaces, that are being used for eating spaces, is visually unappealing and detracts from our pretty downtown.
NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS:

GREAT FOR BUSINESS, SHOWS VIBRANCY:

We respect property owners, who have paid property taxes for decades, and have allowed downtown patrons to use their property for parking free of charge, and we are not in favor of the Town of Apex using their power to take their property through eminent domain (against their will).
We believe an attractive parking garage, located in an agreeable location, is needed to ease parking challenges.
We believe Historic Downtown Apex should remain a family friendly place with a mixture of businesses, and should not "eventually turn into an entertainment district with all bars and restaurants" (quote by a current council member).
Historic Downtown Apex is made up of independent businesses. We already have to compete with Amazon. Please help our independent businesses survive.
