The Issue
SFA is closing the Early Childhood Lab School. I’m heartbroken. I trained there. I taught there. My children went there. This Lab is why SFA graduates walk into classrooms ready to teach on day one. It’s also a cornerstone of quality child care in Nacogdoches. The Early Childhood Lab is why I chose to attend SFA..I saw children learning in a developmentally appropriate environment and was amazed at all of the in hands on learning that involved the students...I made my choice between universities based on what I saw!
Stephen F. Austin's decision to phase out this invaluable resource is reportedly due to financial constraints. However, shutting down the best teacher-training tool SFA has without consulting us is not the solution. This move endangers the future of teacher education and child care quality in our community.
The Early Childhood Lab has been instrumental in fostering skilled educators who contribute significantly to early childhood education. Its closure could create a ripple effect, impacting the quality of education and care. SFA and the community must collaborate to explore sustainable financial solutions, ensuring the Lab continues to serve future generations.
The First phase will begin with the erasure of the infant room which is a crucial classroom to new parents needing quality care for their infants..we can't wait. We have 5 years to make a difference, but we must act NOW before the decision becomes irreversible. It’s crucial to open a dialogue, pool resources, and devise a plan that maintains the Lab without compromising SFA's finances.
