Save St. Teresa's Hospice Rapid Response

The Issue

St. Teresa's Hospice in Darlington has long been a sanctuary for severely ill and dying individuals in our community. Its independent existence allows for a personalized approach to care that differs from more protocol-driven National Health Service structures.

St Teresa’s Hospice - which has run its rapid response service since 2011 delivering 24/7 essential pain management and crisis intervention - was left devastated this week after its contract was awarded to the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT).

In the UK, independent hospices such as St. Teresa's provide more than 200,000 people with end-of-life care every year (Hospice UK, 2019). They play a vital role in our health system, complementing the work of the NHS, but also offering a more personal centre approach in people's own homes.

The strength of hospices like St. Teresa's lies in their independence. They can adapt services to the needs of their patients and community in a way larger entities like the NHS Trust cannot.

Awarding the St Teresa's rapid response contract to NHS trust could lead to more standardized procedures that may not recognize the unique needs of individual patients.

We urge those in authority to reconsider their decision.
