Save St. Stan’s School — Protect 150+ Years of Education in Chicago

More than a century ago, Chicago literally moved an expressway to protect St. Stan’s.
Today, we’re asking people across Chicago — and across the country — to stand with this historic school and the families it serves.
In January, families, students, alumni, and staff received heartbreaking news:
St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy is scheduled to close at the end of this school year.
Founded by Polish immigrants in 1874, the school has long been a pillar of faith, education, and community, supporting generations of students and families.
Located in Chicago’s historic Wicker Park / West Town neighborhood, St. Stan’s has served families for more than 150 years.
Today, the possible closure of St. Stan’s threatens the loss of a historic school and a community legacy that has served children for over a century.
A School That Is Part of Chicago’s History
In the 1950s, the Kennedy Expressway was rerouted to avoid demolishing St. Stan’s, recognizing the historic importance of this parish and school to the city.
For generations, St. Stan’s has welcomed families from across Chicago.
Today, the school serves students from more than 40 zip codes, bringing together a diverse community of families seeking a safe, values-based education.
It is not uncommon to find three generations of St. Stan’s alumni — grandparents, parents, and children — all at the same school, a testament to the generational value St. Stan’s has provided to families who walked these hallways and continue to do so today.
A School Where Students Thrive
St. Stan’s is committed to strong academic achievement.
In the 2023–2024 school year, St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy achieved the highest reading scores in its network, reflecting the dedication of its teachers and students.
Schools like St. Stan’s do more than educate children.
They strengthen families, anchor neighborhoods, and build community across generations.
Our Community Is Ready to Act
After the many dedicated efforts already made to sustain the school, our community is deeply grateful and is asking for the opportunity to make one final, united effort.
St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy has served generations of Chicago families for over 150 years. Today, parents, alumni, parishioners, and community members believe there may still be possibilities if our community is given the opportunity to come together and act.
Other Catholic school communities facing closure have come together to explore possible paths forward. While not every effort has succeeded, some communities have been able to find a way forward.
We simply ask for the opportunity to make one final good-faith effort — together as a community — to explore a path forward for St. Stan’s.
If our community can come together in support, it will allow us to move forward with the next steps of this broader effort and thoughtfully consider what may still be possible.
We recognize that efforts like this do not always lead to a final solution. Still, some communities have come together to explore possible paths forward, and other schools are exploring similar efforts today.

En enero, familias, estudiantes, exalumnos y personal recibieron la dolorosa noticia de que St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy, ubicada en 1255 N. Noble Street en Chicago, está programada para cerrar al final de este año escolar.
Durante más de 150 años, St. Stan’s ha sido un pilar de fe, educación y comunidad en Chicago.
Hoy la escuela sirve a estudiantes de más de 40 códigos postales y reúne a una comunidad diversa de familias de toda la ciudad. Muchos estudiantes provienen de familias trabajadoras y de bajos ingresos que buscan una educación segura, basada en valores y en la fe.
