Save St Sidwell's Crèche!

The Issue

The news that the crèche at St Sidwell's Point is planning to close is incredibly sad. There is no other service like it available to the parents of Exeter and the knock on effect will be huge.

Providing new parents with an opportunity to exercise when on maternity/paternity leave has huge benefits to their physical health both in the short term and reducing long term complications. Maternal obesity, excessive gestational weight gain and post-partum weight retention constitute new challenges to public health. Associations with increases in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and joint problems in later life will add pressure to an already stretched healthcare system.

The crèche provides invaluable emotional support for parents. In a society where up to 20% of mums develop postnatal depression the benefits of exercise and endorphins on mental health are huge. Not only this but having a resource where parents can have a break for an hour can save their sanity and their relationships. The advice that the staff offer regarding feeding, teething and development is also a huge support given the funding cuts to the health visitor service.

The crèche is also hugely beneficial to the children. It encourages them to be independent, socialise with other children and will reduce separation anxiety when starting pre school and school.

The team can only be described as outstanding in their commitment, experience and knowledge in the childcare field. Most importantly they provide a nurturing and safe environment for the children in their care.

We appreciate resources like this need to be sustainable but the impact of closure will be huge. Please sign this petition to help us encourage the council to re think their decision.

Any feedback from your experience using the crèche would also be really helpful - please leave any testimonials in the comments!
