Sloth Encounters—Islip's illegal exotic animal petting zoo—was ordered to close in September by Suffolk County Supreme Court Judge Hon. Joseph Santorelli. However, Sloth Encounters owner Larry Wallach has not only continued to illegally exhibit sloths in Islip but hauled them on the road to exploit them in people's homes and restaurants.

Wallach is now advertising for sale to the general public: sloths, red kangaroos, porcupines, bearcats, fennec foxes, wallabies, armadillos (who carry leprosy), pythons, tarantulas, iguanas, and other animals who are illegal to possess and sell in Islip.

In addition to having sharp teeth, claws, and powerful hind legs, Red kangaroos are the largest marsupial in the world, growing up to 6ft tall and weighing up to 200lbs. To illustrate the danger, you may consider that a pet Gray kangaroo, which is roughly half the size of a Red kangaroo, made international news last year after he killed his owner and blocked paramedics from reaching him before being shot dead by the police.

Porcupines have quills that can pose fatal to dogs and even animals as large as lions.

Bearcats are carnivores who grow to be as large as coyotes. In addition to being listed as "vulnerable" by the IUCN Red List, they are nocturnal, so like sloths they would naturally be asleep during the daylight hours they are being exploited.

None of these animals are suitable pets or props.

Humane Long Island has just submitted a motion to introduce an amicus curiae brief to the Supreme Court, exposing Wallach's continued defiance of the Supreme Court.

Please join our fight to help sloths, kangaroos, and other animals by contacting the below authorities:

  • Contact Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter at (631) 224-5500 and supervisorsoffice@islipny.gov and urge her to take Sloth Encounters back to court for contempt.
  • Email federal authorities at animalcare@usda.gov and urge them to revoke Wallach's license for failing to abide by local laws.
  • Contact the Suffolk County Legislature at 631-853-3685 or email its clerk at Frank.Tassone@suffolkcountyny.gov to urge the legislature to pass Intro 1777 to restrict traveling exotic animal acts, both to protect public safety and animal welfare.
