Save Sledge Forest

The Issue

We, the undersigned, believe the 4000+ acres of Sledge Forest is a local, natural treasure.  The citizens of the Castle Hayne community deserve to have their voices heard.  This "Hilton Bluffs" project does not allow for any public input or any review by our elected officials, despite its profound consequences.

Over 4,000 homes will be built on 1000 acres.  Over 30,000 car trips per day will be generated from this huge development, flowing on to Castle Hayne Rd.

The NC Heritage Program considers it of National Significance and it should be protected.  Remaining mostly untouched through 6000 years of habitat evolution, it is a biodiverse community of plants & animals containing 350 year old pine trees more than 60' tall, and cypress dated more than 500 years, with a vast array of wildlife, birds and insects who make their home there.

The destruction of this last, largest swatch of old growth forest by the proposed development of Hilton Bluffs, is reprehensible and unacceptable.  It belongs under conversation protection to be revered and enjoyed for future generations of the Cape Fear region.
