Save Skate-O-Mania from closing in Albuquerque
Save Skate-O-Mania from closing in Albuquerque
The Issue
Skate-O-Mania at 400 Paisano St NE isn't just a building. It's 45 years of Albuquerque memories.
Since 1980 — when it first opened as Roller King — it has been the place for birthday parties, family nights, school fundraisers, and weekend skates. It's even been a filming location for Stranger Things. For many of us on the Westside and South Valley, it's the only affordable, safe place where kids can be active without a screen.
Right now, Skate-O-Mania may have to close this November. Not because people don't love it, but because insurance premiums have gotten too high to keep running.
If it closes, Albuquerque will lose its last dedicated roller rink. That means:
No more affordable $10 skate sessions for families
No more safe,We are calling on the City of Albuquerque, local businesses, and the owner to work together to find a solution — whether that's help with insurance costs, a community fundraising partnership, grants for historic community landmarks, or a public-private partnership to keep the doors open.
Other cities have saved their rinks this way. We can too.
If you have ever celebrated a birthday there, learned to skate there, had your first job there, or just want your kids to have the same chance we did — please sign and share.
Let's keep the lights on, the disco ball spinning, and the wheels rolling for another 45 years.
