As mentioned in Politico's defense brief, Sine Irish Pub in Arlington, VA, is one of those rare establishments that has transcended mere business to become a part of the community. Located near the Pentagon, Sine has become something of the Unofficial Officer’s Club of the Pentagon, where the military-industrial complex goes to let its hair (buzzcut?) down. Beyond the countless promotions and retirements, Sine is a part of This Town. Sine played host to the celebration marking the establishment of the US military’s newest branch, the United States Space Force. Sine has hosted book launches (and has even been favorably mentioned in books about the culture of the defense community). Any journalist worth their salt in the DC circuit or defense press knows Sine and has been there more than a few times. Above and beyond all of that, it’s more than an “after work” bar. Area locals from all over grace its tables and stools regularly.
But the constant grind of COVID has shut the doors of this beloved establishment. Just as we gave a sigh of collective relief in closing out 2020, Sine announced that they wouldn’t be able to be a part of a new, hopeful 2021. On January 2, Sine’s management announced that they would be closing their doors for good.
We, the customers, supporters, fans, and patrons of Sine humbly petition the Pentagon Row management to work with Sine management, help them through these hard times and see if we can bring this old, dear friend across the finish line and through a bright and hopeful New Year.
