Save Services at Gorseinon Hospital

Save Services at Gorseinon Hospital
The Issue
We are profoundly concerned about the potential impact of the proposed changes by Swansea Bay University Health Board on Gorseinon Hospital and the wider community.
These changes, which involve scaling down inpatient beds and shifting services to Singleton Hospital, could significantly alter the functioning and role of Gorseinon Hospital; ultimately affecting both the staff and the local community. The Health Board mentions that this is on a temporary basis, however we know from experience that this is how permanent change begins.
Gorseinon Hospital has long been recognised as a vital community hospital, playing a crucial role in alleviating pressure on larger hospitals by providing essential services locally. This not only ensures timely healthcare access for the residents of Gorseinon and surrounding areas but also supports the broader health infrastructure by managing patient loads efficiently. It also allows integrated services with Swansea Council’s home care and reablement teams being based at the hospital.
Unfortunately, the proposed plans would compromise the principle of partnership working. By reducing inpatient facilities at Gorseinon Hospital, (even on a temporary basis),patients who would otherwise receive care in their community will now be forced to travel further; putting additional strain on themselves, their families, and the healthcare system. Singleton Hospital, already dealing with its own capacity challenges, may face increased pressures, potentially affecting the quality of care both there and in Gorseinon.
The staff at Gorseinon Hospital, many of whom are also residents of the community, are worried about the implications for their jobs and working conditions. These changes could lead to job displacement, reduced hours or increased travel costs; contributing to economic uncertainties in Gorseinon at a time when stability is crucial.
It is vital to retain Gorseinon Hospital services to ensure that our community continues to have accessible, quality healthcare while maintaining local employment and alleviating burdens on larger hospitals. We need to send a strong message to Swansea Bay University Health Board that the health and wellbeing of Gorseinon’s residents cannot be compromised.
Sign this petition to demand that the Swansea Bay University Health Board reconsider their proposals, and commit to preserving the vital services that Gorseinon Hospital provides to our community for the future. Our healthcare should remain local, accessible, and robust for all of us now and for future generations.
