Selmo the Hippo is a beloved local resident in our community, and though he is often spotted near the school, he has never harmed any of the children or members of the community. Despite this, his presence has caused some fear, leading authorities to schedule his removal within the next 60 days, possibly as soon as this month. This alarming decision could lead to tragic consequences for Selmo, and it’s absolutely imperative we find a more humane solution.  https://english.elpais.com/international/2026-09-28/two-dozen-children-vs-pablo-escobars-hippo-the-legal-battle-to-get-to-a-colombian-school.html

Selmo, with his curious eyes and gentle demeanor, has become a part of our local ecosystem. His removal—without any incidents of aggression or harm towards humans—seems unjust. We must act quickly to ensure that this decision doesn’t lead to his death, but rather, to a new beginning in a sanctuary that can provide him a safe, suitable home.

Across the world, successful relocations of wild animals to sanctuaries demonstrate that there are effective alternatives to euthanization. Sanctuaries such as those operated by international wildlife conservation organizations are equipped to accommodate animals like Selmo, providing them with veterinary care, proper nutrition, and ample space to roam. Many sanctuaries have existing programs that focus on rehabilitating and nurturing animals like Selmo, ensuring they live out their years in peace.

We must urge local wildlife authorities to prioritize Selmo’s relocation to a reputable sanctuary. Not only does this solution align with wildlife conservation efforts globally, but it also sets a precedent for dealing with similar situations humanely in the future. We can make a difference by voicing our concern and demanding a compassionate approach towards Selmo’s situation.
